DocAda Light(tm)

The Integrated Hypertext Ada 95 Reference Manual(tm)

About DocAda Light: Preface to the April 1997 Edition

The 1995 revision of the Ada standard arrived at an auspicious time. Ada 95 is the first internationally standardized object-oriented programming language, and personal computers are now powerful enough to run Ada compilers without problem.

As we write this, many Ada 95 compilers have already been validated and more are expected to receive that sanction in the near future. In order to take full advantage of the new tools designed to support software development with Ada 95, we need an intimate grasp of the language and its reference manual.

DocAda(tm) will help.

DocAda was designed to improve the productivity of Ada programmers by letting them quickly and efficiently consult an online, hypertext version of the three major reference works on Ada 95: the reference manual, the rationale, and the annotated reference manual. The free DocAda Light version contains only the normative text of the reference manual. The commercial DocAda versions have complete texts and many more features.

This product would not have been possible without the availability of the original Ada 95 documents in simple electronic format and the deliberate freedom from restrictions in their copyright notice. Nor would it have succeeded without a powerful dose of Perl, Larry Wall's "Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lister."

Easier Access and Greater Understanding.

The primary purpose of DocAda is to provide easier access and greater understanding into the Ada 95 Reference Manual by creating a well-structured hypertext document with an abundance of links and powerful navigating options (as well as --in the commercial version-- including links to and from the Rationale and AARM in a manner in which these two works are always immediately and contextually accessible where they may be helpful).

Mistakes, omissions and errors in DocAda are our responsibility. Please forward any that you find to our attention that they may be corrected in future editions. Your suggestions for improvements and additions are always welcome.
