First Author, Second Author, ... N-th author, Yuichi Goto, and Jingde Cheng

Abstract:
A persistent computing system is a reactive system that functions
continuously anytime without stopping its reactions even when it needs
to be maintained, upgraded, or reconfigured, it has some trouble, or it
is attacked. It has been proposed as an infrastructure of computing
anticipatory systems. The reactability of a persistent computing system,
i.e., the capability how many kinds of stimuli from the outside
environment the system can react to at a certain time, is the most
important property to characterize the system. On the other hand, to
be anticipatory, the reactability of a computing anticipatory system must
be continuous. However, there is no clearly defined standard to be used
for measuring the reactability of a persistent computing system. Of course
the continuous reactability of a persistent computing system is also not
clearly defined. This paper proposes the first method to measure the
reactability and the continuous reactability of a persistent computing
system in a unified way.

Construction:

1. Introduction

The notion of anticipatory system, in particular, computing anticipatory
system, implies a fundamental assumption or requirement, i.e., to be
anticipatory, a computing system must behave continuously and
persistently without stopping its running.

To be anticipatory, the reactability of a computing
anticipatory system must be continuous.

There is no clearly defined standard to be used for measuring the
reactability of a computing system, and the continuous reactability of a
computing system is also not clearly defined.

2. Persistent Computing Systems

A persistent computing system as a reactive system which will never be
in the dead state such that it can evolve into a new functional state in
some (autonomous or controlled) way, or can be recovered into a
functional state from a partially functional or disfunctional state by
some (autonomous or controlled) way.

A persistent computing system can be constructed by a group of control
components including self-measuring, self-monitoring, and
self-controlling components with general-purpose which are independent
of systems, a group of functional component to carry out special takes
of the system, some data/instruction buffers, and some data/instruction
buses.

3. Reactability and Continuous Reactability

To be anticipatory, it is insufficient only the computing anticipatory
system is not in a dead state when the event the system predicts occurs.
The system should be able to keep at least a partially reactive
state enough to react against the event and to act according to its
predictions.

The continuous reactability of a persistent computing system is a
capability how long the system can keep its reactability enough to do
reactions which the system, its developers, and/or its users expect.

The continuous reactability of a persistent computing system from past
to now is estimated from reactabilities of the system from past to now.

The continuous reactability of a persistent computing system from now to
future is estimated from software reliability and correctness of each
component which constructs the system, present each usage rate
of computing resource of a computing environment where the component runs,
amount of computing resource each component needs, and present
reactability of the system.

4. A Measurement Method

Conceptually, a reactive processing path, RPP for short, is simply a
directed acyclic graph which specifies operations and the processing
order among them performed by component interfaces of a persistent
computing system.

The reactability of a persistent computing system is ratio between
the number of active RPPs and all RPPs of the system at a certain time.

The continuous reactability of a persistent computing system is time
that the system was able to be kept better than a certain reactability.

5. Implementation Issues

To be anticipatory, computing systems should be able to behave
continuously and persistently. To be continuously and persistently,
computing systems should be able to be anticipatory.

How can we measure the continuous reactability of a persistent computing
system from now to future?

6. Concluding Remarks

In this paper, we have defined the reactability and the continuous
reactability of a persistent computing system, and introduced the
notion of reactive processing path for reactability measurement of a
persistent computing system.

We also presented how a persistent computing system with the facilities
to measure the reactability can be constructed by a group of control
components and a group of functional components, and discussed its
implementation issues.
